Debarawewa Central College stands as the only National School in the Tissamaharama Education Zone in the Hambantota District. It has enriched the community by providing quality education and obtaining extraordinary results at public examinations.

Debarawewa Central was established in 1936 by then village leader Mr.D.D. Senanayake to commemorate his late son. It was firstly known as Debarawewa Vidyalaya and there were only 35 students and three teachers. In 1944 with the ideas of Dr.C.C. Kannangara, the English Government decided to establish ‘Central Colleges’, with the intention of providing Free Education to all children in Sri Lanka and in the process Debarawewa Vidyalaya too was promoted to Central College Status.
Gradually Debarawewa Central became one of the best schools which provided the largest number of students who passed G.C.E (O/L) and G.C.E (A/L) under the guidance of several principals who headed the school from time to time.
T
oday there are more than 2300 students getting quality education under the guidance of 85 teachers. The present principal is Mr.K.A.D. Karunarathna. The school provides many facilities to improve the knowledge of the students. The Information and Communication Technology Unit, Physical Education Unit, Library Unit and Language Unit are some of them. Moreover several organizations have been formed and their movements are conducting very useful programmes for the benefit of the school. The societies function as a platform for children who are aspiring to be leaders in the Society they live. The Cadet Corp, Environmental Corp and First Aid Unit movements give their full support to the school and society.
